Clinics & Services

Apart from routine and urgent appointments, the following services and clinics are available at this surgery.

Health Checks (MOT's)

These can be performed on request and are usually undertaken by the practice nurses. Apart from the usual examination expected, Lister Medical Centre has a cholesterol testing machine, a spirometer (for the investigation of  asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and a 24 hour sphygmomanometer (blood pressure machine), for the investigation of raised blood pressure.

Diabetic Clinics

Diabetes is an extremely common disease affecting some 2½% of the population. Uncontrolled diabetes can cause heart, kidney, eye and arterial disease so tight management of the problem is essential. Run by the practice nurses under the control of the doctors, we aim to provide regular checks on those diabetic patients (mainly the adult maturity onset diabetics) not seen by the hospital. Patients with diabetes will also be seen by chiropodists, dieticians and opticians (for free annual eye checks) by arrangement through this clinic and your own GP.

Travel Clinic

Lister Medical Centre provides complete advice and preventative care for the traveller abroad. At Lister House, we purchase and stock most of the vaccines needed and offer the yellow fever vaccination (not restricted to Lister Medical Centre patients). Where possible, please book an appointment with the clinic well in advance of your travel arrangements to ensure you receive maximum protection (see separate web page).

A dietician runs a weekly clinic on patients referred by their doctor. The clinic is not for uncomplicated weight reduction but is provided for patients with medical problems where dietetic help would prove useful (i.e. diabetes, raised cholesterol, bowel disorders).

Cervical Smears

Through the use of computerisation, Lister Medical Centre has an efficient recall system to enable us to inform our female patients when their cervical smear is due. At present, routine smears are performed every five years, although more frequently if the clinical condition warrants it. Most smears are taken by the practice nurses.

New Patient Health Checks

These are offered to all new registrations. At present, these checks are provided by our health care assistants.

Over 75 Health Check

Patients aged 75 or over are invited to have an annual health check by prior arrangement.

Asthma Clinics

Asthma also is an extremely common condition. Uncontrolled asthma carries significant morbidity. Our practice nurses have had extensive training in the management of asthma and are used in the treatment and management of new asthmatics picked up by  the doctors and well as monitoring existing asthmatics as deemed necessary.

Antenatal, Postnatal and Six week baby checks

Joint antenatal care is provided by the doctors and the midwives in regular weekly clinics. Uncomplicated pregnancies are managed exclusively within the practice although ultrasound scans are needed at Princess Alexandra Hospital. Although delivery is encouraged at the hospital, postnatal care is undertaken as soon as the mother and baby return home (for the first 10 days). Subsequent to this, the health visitor makes a home visit to introduce herself and advise on further care of the baby. Between 6 to 8 weeks, mothers are invited for a postnatal check. At that time, any concerns can be discussed and family planning advice given. In addition, the baby is given a comprehensive check.

At Lister Medical Centre, there are physiotherapists available every week to offer a range of treatments on conditions referred by the doctors.

Lister House offers the full range of immunisations to both adults and children. Most of the focus of our attention is directed to children under 5 who receive their Triple (Diphtheria, Tetanus & Pertussis), H.I.B, Meningitis C and polio vaccines at two, three and four months of age and their MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) at the age of about fourteen months. Prior to starting school, boosters are given for diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio and MMR.

A new Department of Health guideline means that routine BCG vaccinations for tuberculosis will not be offered to all secondary school children but will be offered to those with particular risk factors. Individuals who are more likely to be at risk, and who will be offered a vaccine include children whose parents or grandparents were born in a place where TB is common. This includes many countries in Africa, Asia, South America as well as parts of Eastern Europe.

However, we still offer adults immunisations when due and run a travel clinic for those travelling abroad. We purchase and stock hepatitis A, hepatitis B, tetanus and meningovax vaccines, for example, and can obtain other vaccines when indicated, quickly. We also run an extensive 'Flu vaccination programme for the over 65's and vulnerable groups in the autumn.

All Adults aged between 20-24 are now encouraged to book an appointment for immunisation with MenC (Meningococcal C) vaccine. The overall risk of meningococcal infection in this age group is twice that of the general population. To get your 'jab' arrange to see one of the practice nurses.

Minor Surgery

At present there are two doctors at Lister Medical Centre who provide minor surgery sessions on a weekly basis. All Partners refer patients to them for treatment. The type of surgery undertaken include the treatment of in growing toe nails and the removal of sebaceous cysts and moles. We also possess liquid nitrogen for the removal of lesions such as verrucae. This procedure is undertaken by all doctors, routinely, in their surgeries.

Smoking Cessation

Lister Medical Centre runs its own smoking cessation clinics for individuals wanting to quit smoking. If you are interested, make an appointment to see one of our Health Care Assistants.
